Quando Colombe Schneck aspetta il suo primo bambino, la madre Hélène le chiede di chiamarlo Salomé, in ricordo di sua cugina morta durante l'Olocausto. Il fratello e le sorelle di Ginda sopravvivono alla selezione e alla deportazione mentre Mary, i cognati e i loro figli muoiono. Raya e Masa dopo la guerra si risposeranno con altri sopravvissuti all'Olocausto, che avevano a propria volta perso le mogli e i figli. E altri bambini nasceranno. La domanda che nessuno osa porsi è questa: com'è possibile che Salomé, la figlia di sette anni di Raya, e Kalman, il bambino di soli tre anni figlio di Masa, siano morti e le loro madri no?
