In the early hours of almost every morning during the Covid lockdown in the months of March and April 2021, these poems began mysteriously arriving - like persistent early morning visitors. Curiously, the author's wife was absent for the whole of this time, and much to her amusement, in her place lay an open notebook, a blank page and a pen. Soon nearly 40 poems filled the notebook - Martin never having written poetry in his life before. Although the pandemic provides the foreground for this collection of poems, they have also been prompted by timeless universal themes, symbolised in a snowdrop, a park bench or an olive tree; found in conversations about love and life and death, in news items and random images. But most of all arising out of that deep longing for union and freedom at the source of each of us. The poems are about what it means to be alive and deeply connected to the natural world. In so doing they go to the heart of mindful living and non-dual wisdom

SHORT LISTED FOR THE 2021 CHRISTOPHER BLAND PRIZE\n'The Lost Homestead is a memoir of Wheeler's mother and her family, which turns out to be so much more than that... it takes the reader into the contested history of India and Pakistan in the 1940s, and explores the impact of partition and division (from the Punjab to Berlin) on the lives of individuals.' - MARY BEARD\n\n'Deeply touching.' - Daily Mail\n\n'A personal, sometimes harrowing history of partition... a writer well worth reading.' - The Times\n\n'A deeply personal story of identity and a highly relatable journey for many in the diaspora... Wheeler taps a rich vein of personal history... Evocative... Gripping.' - Financial Times\n\n'A timely read given the current reassessment of colonialism . . . a charming memoir that weaves the story of India independence and the tragedy of the partition with that of her mother's own escape from an unhappy marriage.' - Christina Lamb, Sunday Times\n\n'A personal, sometimes harrowing history of partition . . . by narrating partition with a focus on her mother's family, the Singhs, she has made the abstractions of history suddenly more real: they are given names, faces and feelings . . . offers valuable insights, especially since Gandhi and Jinnah were also products of London's inns of court . . . [Marina Wheeler is] a writer well worth reading.' - Tanjil Rashid, The Times\n\n'A family journey, a political drama, a historical legacy - magnificently portrayed with courage, humanity and a gentle power.' - Philippe Sands, author of East West Street and The Ratline\n\n'A wonderful memoir, gripping, elegant, warm and insightful - a triumph. An intimate and inspiring portrayal of how a woman made her own world as nations and empire were made and unmade.' - Dr Shruti Kapila, Lecturer in Modern History, University of Cambridge\n\n'This book is more than a family memoir - it is an insightful glimpse into the way small worlds are forever changed by the impersonal currents of history.' Shashi Tharoor, author of Inglorious Empire: What the British Did to India\n\n***\n\nOn 3 June 1947, as British India descended into chaos, its division into two states was announced. For months the violence and civil unrest escalated. With millions of others, Marina Wheeler's mother Dip Singh and her Sikh family were forced to flee their home in the Punjab, never to return. \n\nAs an Anglo-Indian with roots in what is now Pakistan, Marina Wheeler weave's her mother's story of loss and new beginnings, personal and political freedom into the broader, still highly contested, history of the region. We follow Dip when she marries Marina's English father and leaves India for good, to Berlin, then a divided city, and to Washington DC where the fight for civil rights embraced the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. \n\nThe Lost Homestead touches on global themes that strongly resonate today: political change, religious extremism, migration, minorities, nationhood, identity and belonging. But above...

Jones, Adrienne Kennedy, Lola Pashalinksi, Jennifer Tipton, Kate Valk, Mac Wellman, and Robert Wilson, The Lost Conversation is also a record both of the avant-garde's past and of its urgent present.

***Evening Standard's best non-fiction 2021***\n\n\n\n'A brilliant, searing exposé of the lies underpinning work' - Owen Jones\n\n\n\n'Work hard, get paid.' It's simple. Self-evident. But it's also a lie—at least for most of us. For people today, the old assumptions are crumbling; hard work in school no longer guarantees a secure, well-paying job in the future. Far from a gateway to riches and fulfilment, 'work' means precarity, anxiety and alienation.\n\n\n\nAmelia Horgan poses three big questions: what is work? How does it harm us? And what can we do about it? While abolishing work altogether is not the answer, Lost in Work shows that when we are able to take control of our workplaces, we become less miserable, and can work towards the transformative goal of experimenting with 'work' as we know it.

Mediterranean Economies 2021-2022. The Mediterranean After The Calamity: Economics And Politics In The Post-pandemic World
Lafeltrinelli.it
Spedizione: 2.7 EUR

EAN: 9788815294630
Categoria: Libri e riviste

The coronavirus pandemic has shocked the world and its consequences will last for many years. The enormous costs of the pandemic will only be known ex post. While some people will have lost nothing, others will have lost everything, sometimes even their lives. On the positive side, most governments around the globe have started to design optimal policies to face the incredible challenges that lie ahead for the humanity. The geopolitics of the world will change as a result of increasing tensions and conflicts between the great powers such as the United States, China and Russia. The competition between democracy and authoritarianism will intensify; the synergy of market and state will be transformed. It will be particularly dangerous to see two sides of the same coin as alternatives: neoliberal capitalism versus populist capitalism. The Mediterranean Economies 2020 is a collection of essays that analyses the economic, political and social effects of the pandemic on the regions of the Mediter - ranean area. The results of the investigation carried out highlight that chance for a better future could be created by a gradual transition to a new pragmatism, a strategy of moderation in economic matters, and development that is sustainable on three levels - economic, social and ecological. The pandemic is an enormous challenge for the social sciences, because old ways of thinking often prove useless for analyzing and explaining new scenarios.

Alber Elbaz : Love Brings Love
Lafeltrinelli.it
Brand: Alber Elbaz
EAN: 9780847872794
Categoria: Libri e riviste

On April 24, 2021, the designer Alber Elbaz passed away due to complications from Covid-19. The artistic director of the House of Lanvin from 2001 to 2016, he was the most consequential figure from the fashion community lost to the pandemic. Love Brings Love, the celebration of Alber Elbaz s life and work that concluded Paris Fashion Week on October 5, 2021 remains a unique event in the recent history of the industry. In tribute, 44 designers, from nearly all the French and Italian maisons, to his dear friends in Japan and the United States, created dresses for a memorial fashion show the first collaborative one to have ever been held in Paris. Of the over 70 looks, thirty were by Alber, posthumously executed by his team at AZ Factory. The international fashion community came as one family to publicly mourn and remember one of their own, with a reverence and affection reserved only to someone so universally and genuinely loved. The book is divided into three parts, which includes texts written by Alber prior to his passing, a sequence of sketches by 44 designers/maisons, including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Comme des Garcons, Giambattista Valli, Gucci, John Paul Gaultier, Rick Owens, Valentino, on uncoated stock, and a section of completed dresses, including dresses designed by Alber, on matte coated stock. The sequence describes in ways both conceptual and material how his friends and peers saw him, and how they intimately honored his memory with their own work.

Albert Roux My Life In Food: A Memoir
Lafeltrinelli.it
Brand: Albert Roux
EAN: 9781474617765
Categoria: Libri e riviste

In 2021, the world of cooking lost a legendary figure. Albert Roux, together with his brother Michel, transformed the way we eat, cook and appreciate food in this country. It is no exaggeration to say that most of what makes our current culinary landscape so vibrant began with these two brothers and their ground-breaking restaurant, Le Gavroche.\n\nAlbert first arrived in England in the fifties, at a time of grey and brown food, with a nation still reeling from the effects of war and rationing. Cooking in the grand private houses of the aristocracy, he was to fall in love with the country and, after his military service, which he spent fighting in the Algerian Civil War, he would eventually make it his home for life. He and his brother set up Le Gavroche in 1967. It was to become the first restaurant in the UK to gain first one, and eventually three, Michelin stars. Together with their other restaurants, including the renowned Waterside Inn in Bray, it would go on to revolutionise the industry. The Roux restaurants set on their course an entire generation of award-winning chefs: his proteges include Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing, Rowley Leigh and Monica Galetti, to name just a tiny fraction. He won every plaudit possible in the world of food, and was granted an OBE, a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, and a papal knighthood.\n\nAlbert's memoir takes us from his childhood in wartime France, where the ever-looming presence of the German troops made it a challenge for his mother to keep the family fed, right up to the almost instant success of Le Gavroche, which welcomed everybody from royalty - the Queen Mother and Princess Diana were both regulars - to Hollywood legends including Charlie Chaplin. He talks frankly about his famed relationship with his brother, and about the encounter which derailed his first boyhood ambition to join the priesthood. His drive, humour and joie de vivre leap off every page, and the insight into what it took to break new ground in the restaurant industry is unmatched.\n\nThese are the last words from a pioneer, a hero who inspired entire generations of chefs. They tell the story not only of a titan of a man, but of an era that shaped the way we cook and eat today.

Look, there are two ways to go. Do you freeze in place, looking backwards all the time… or do you move on?\n\nSummer 2021. Lockdown is over. Just.\n\nThree months ago Milo lost his wife to Covid. She was only forty five. So young.\n\nTonight he has invited his two oldest pals, Davie and Liane, to come round and drink some wine, listen to some tunes and reminisce about the olden days.\n\nAnd there’s something else… He wants them to meet the new love of his life. Her name is Greta. They met online. And she’s twenty years old.\n\nFrom the celebrated writer of Decky Does a Bronco and I Can Go Anywhere, Douglas Maxwell’s So Young sees an innocuous evening slide towards ruin as old friends face the challenges of middle age… the pull of the past… and the promise of the future.\n\nThis edition was published to coincide with the TravFest24 run at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre in August 2024.

WINNER OF THE INDIE BOOK AWARD 2022 FOR NON-FICTION\n\n\n\nWINNER OF THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY STORYTELLING AWARD 2021\n\n\n\n'Riveting, taking in prejudice as well as sacrifice. There are 4.30am starts, lost instruments, fractured wrists, all captured with vivid flourishes. A paean to camaraderie.' Observer\n\n\n\nSeven brothers and sisters. All of them classically trained musicians. One was Young Musician of the Year and performed for the royal family. The eldest has released her first album, showcasing the works of Clara Schumann. These siblings don't come from the rarefied environment of elite music schools, but from a state comprehensive in Nottingham. How did they do it?\n\n\n\nTheir mother, Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason, opens up about what it takes to raise a musical family in a Britain divided by class and race. What comes out is a beautiful and heartrending memoir of the power of determination, camaraderie and a lot of hard work. The Kanneh-Masons are a remarkable family. But what truly sparkles in this eloquent memoir is the joyous affirmation that children are a gift and we must do all we can to nurture them.
